Fantastic Regular, 2022 - 2024

This fantastical narrative is an exploration of time, where multiple views of one location merge into a single frame. Light is refracted into color forms, and growth happens on a macro scale superimposed onto a lush, photo-collaged nature-scape. This work translates a metamorphosis in nature that the human eye can perceive.

I am interested in the idea of a “beautiful” change in nature, as I grapple suddenly with so much personal change - - my female body changing in mid-life, my teenage daughters’ bodies changing into women, and my mother’s body falling into itself. Through this intense and saturated imagery, I fantasize about the multifold changes in nature, making them perceptible and finding solace in this parallel to the body’s clock and a generational life span. I am looking for elements that point to the cycle of rebirth; what is left behind that may lead to growth and regeneration.

The inspiration for this project began with a single field in Upstate, New York that leads to a nature preserve. The path is one I take regularly, and it is very personally meaningful. In this familiar space, I have seen how a commonplace landscape is transformed by a simple, natural phenomena like a sunrise or fog- shifting it from mundane to sublime. The sublime is explored further with the addition of layers to the canvas. I scan paintings, collages and photographs of flowers and layer them on top of the sweeping landscape. I aim to reveals the imperceptible growth, and the language of non sentient beings in the life cycles of the land with fleeting bursts of joy of flora.
